Don't Chase After Benefits
Jan 27, 2022You've heard it a hundred times, as have I. In fact, you've probably said it before: "I need a job with good benefits" or "This job has benefits, so it's better than the job without benefits".
When we make blanket statements like this without knowing more details, it sets us up for potential danger. Should you take a job because it has benefits? Maybe. But maybe not! Benefits doesn't make a job good or bad. So be careful when you are chasing after benefits.
Our society has taught us to look for benefits a company is offering and analyze the entire job on that offer. Benefits are great, but they shouldn't be as high on the priority list as we put them. If it's a bad culture, has bad leadership, ethics, poor communication, awful employees, but a solid benefits package, will it be a good job? No way! I've also seen people that take a significantly lesser paying job because it had "benefits". But when we looked into it, those benefits weren't all that great. The person would have been better off taking the higher paying job with no benefits and paying for their benefits out of pocket in the open market.
Your first priority shouldn't be benefits. It should be finding or creating the work that allows you to be yourself, thrive, and live your Ideal Life. If you need help discovering what that is, I can help. https://www.sentinelcoaching.com/coaching
